Missionaries At Home

Our Missions Focus today was the idea that a Christian should go out and make disciples.  What that looks like can be different to many people.  We are talking about the Missionaries that go to other countries and through their work of charity they hope to guide people towards Christ.  We also hope to do the same.  Whether we are ministering to the needy in our own community, making White Cross supplies that are sent overseas to the hospitals in Africa, donating money to charities that we personally support or that our church supports as well as multitudes of other things that can make us missionaries in our own right.  As long as the goal is to lead people to Christ the missions work that you do is good.

    Assurance and Joy through Adversity

    A Powerful outpouring of the truth from our dear Pastor.  Reminding us that we are ALL loved by a Heavenly Father and therefore nurtured and cared for deeply.  We need to know that God Cares for "ME"!!  We can have a personal and intimate relationship with a Holy Father.  We have promises that we are loved, even through the pain, dark places and adversity.  His Word tells us, His actions tell us and especially His death on a cross tells us and shows us the extent that He went to for US.
     
    Ephesians 3: 
     
    14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

    Joy. The missing ingredient.

    Paul's letter to the churches at Philipi reveal a yearning for them to experience the Joy that he felt.  Joy is often the missing ingredient in our lives and we all could use a little more joy.  
    Philippians 1:
    I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
    As a Christian who is serious about a relationship with Jesus we should be exuberant in our joy.  We should not let the worries of this world get us down no matter what.  A hard road to follow... but as Paul explains all throughout the book of Philippians, our joy should be complete if we know and follow Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

    We search the scriptures to determine what God has in store for us in 2019.  We will see the proof there that God will provide for His people.  The "world" claims that life is uncertain and unpredictable and that we should grasp for anything even if it is trivial and be satisfied with that.  Mediocrity....  In this mini series, Pastor Derow outlines 6 points that we can dwell on that assure us that God is in control and holds our "New Year" and those to come.  Our job is to believe on Him and read His word.
     
    1.  Anticipate with certainty, God's grace.  He will never leave us or forsake us.
    2.  Anticipate God's goodness and blessings will continue.
    3.  Anticipate God's continued guidance.
    4.  Anticipate God speaking to us through His word.
    5.  Anticipate God governing as He always has.
    6.  Anticipate God's glory in that He will come again.
     
    Our Scripture for this series was Matthew 16: 1-16.  Jesus tells the Pharisees that they are kinda dumb.  They can watch the sky and predict the weather but they couldn't interpret the scriptures and connect the pieces that pertained to Christ.  They were looking for a big sign but Jesus told them there was only one sign in the story of Jonah and that they were wicked and unbelieving.
    In verse 15 Jesus asks his disciples, "who do you think I am?"  All these points hinge on your answer to Jesus' question.  If answered correctly it reveals our heart and understanding of God and it makes our future clear and hopeful.  When Peter answered, "Your are the Christ!"  Jesus told him that the truth was revealed to him (Peter) not by his own wisdom but by the Holy Spirit of God alone.  It is the power of the Holy Spirit working in all of us.  All of this is meant to encourage and assure and we are left to focus on one thing this year which is a closer and dearer relationship with God and with each other.

    The Breastplate of Righeousness
    Continuing in the series on the full armor of God we hear about the breastplate of Righteousness.  Following closely on the heels of the Belt of Truth, the Breastplate of Righteousness is the second in the lineup of extremely important weaponry the Christian needs in their life.  Without this righteousness that comes only from faith in Jesus Christ our armor is incomplete. This armor is our outward actions and inward attitudes that support our beliefs.  It isn't just proper Christian etiquette, like being kind to one another, it is much more.  When the Bible says put on the full armor of God and we don't, we are being disobedient to Christ.  We are in shorts and flip-flops on our own.  Not in the battle gear that Christ requires us to be in.  But we can't find this gear on our own, it comes only from Biblical truth, which is the word, and Faith.
     
    10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit,which is the word of God.

    10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against [e]flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 [f]in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

    Christmas Eve Morning.  Oh Worship the King!
    In the pages of the Christmas story we see God's act of grace and mercy.  We see His display of providence and blessing.  We see in the devine baby, the giver of life and love.  The author and finisher of our faith, the author and finisher of our salvation.  And to do that, God could have entered human history in all His subline divinity, majesty and glory and yet He chose to do so with the poverty and humility of a servant.  Though there were indisputable signs that preceded and accomplished Christ's birth, preparing the world for the majestic and kingly appearance, yet the birth of Jesus itself was of the humblest, peasant patronage.  In an unimportant town in the roughest and meagerest of surroundings, everything about Him spoke of servitude.  Jesus didn't come to rule over us or oppress us as human rulers so often do.  Rather, He, the king of glory, the great "I AM" came to be the servant of all.  Matthew 20:28 informs us  28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  So therein is the glad tidings of great joy.  Therein is the good news, the gospel complete in Jesus Christ.  The good news of our salvation.  God loves us and has provided salvation and it is complete and expressed fully in Jesus Christ.  The king who came as a baby in the manger.  God's love gift to us.  He only seeks faithful, committed individuals to love Him in return.

    In Luke Chapter 2 we read the Birth story once again.  The scripture tells us that God himself came to us on earth in person.  Not a spirit, not just an idea or a trend, but the actual Emmanuel, God with us, coming in the flesh and living with us to teach and to save. We see these incredible truths: First Emmanuel: It is this God that came and that very fact as encountered in the scriptures, not only in the Christmas story but throughout the Bible, should evoke in you and me the wonder of all the glory that we'll ever need to celebrate, not only Christmas, but to have joy unspeakable, full of glory every day of our lives.
    The second amazing truth is that God became man.  Now, God made many appearances to man in the Bible, but up until this point God never came as one of us, as Luke 1:31 states: "You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus."   The angel made it very clear that Mary would give birth in the natural human way to a human baby.  Fully God.  Fully human.  He was sinless although tempted just as we were, but remained pure.  He fulfilled the scriptures by going to the cross for our salvation.  If you don't know Jesus Christ as saviour and Lord, if you haven't believed in Him and accepted what He did for us on the cross, then you are still there, bowed at the manger scene, looking at the animals, looking at the little baby.... hoping the stars come out.....  We need salvation.  That's why Jesus came.  That's why we have Christmas.  This was GOD Himself, come down to earth to be born.  To save.

    A child asked the Pastor "Does God in heaven have a Christmas Tree?"  In Matthew 21:16 Jesus says “‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’[a]?”  We also looked at multiple passages of scripture that speak of the cross, of the tree that Jesus was crucified on.  So from these passages, both new and Old Testament it is not that much of a stretch to say this morning, but yes, Jesus has His very own Christmas tree. It is no ordinary tree. This tree is the qualifier for mankind’s salvation in and through the person and work of his son Jesus by His sacrificial death on the tree, the old rugged Cross. We have salvation, the remission of sin and guilt, we are saved. That’s where the trees radically differ, Christ’s from ours. Rather under Christ’s tree the imperishable gifts of infinite value and worth, there which are purchased by the death of God’s son again, on the tree, on the cross. Can you see where I’m going with this and how it fits the Christmas scene today? And as we think about God’s spiritual Christmas tree we find that it’s an atonement tree. With all life giving gifts,

    Christmas is only and infinitely about the finished work of Calvary. Jesus, upon the cross, called out “it's done! it's finished!” So Christmas is only the arrival, and then the work begins, and if and when we celebrate anything short of that finished reality in our lives called salvation, Christmas will never be complete. We will be unfulfilled and disillusioned, and that's where so many of us are we’re at the beginning, we’re at the arrival. We celebrate profusely at the arrival but we forget that's not what it's about. No matter how much we celebrate and even say it's about Jesus we're only celebrating his coming.

    First Advent Christmas 2017.
    Are you here today wishing and hoping and longing for good feelings of peace and joy and comfort this Christmas, and you just can't find them and you're angry and you don't know what to do and Christmas comes and goes and you’re the same?   Let me assure you, you won’t find them in anything except in salvation.  That's why we preach Christ, because we all need to be saved. We need salvation,  and Acts 4:12 declares “and there is salvation in no-one else and there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.”   And the name Jesus means what? Saviour.  Just as the angel announced over 2000 years ago "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour who is Christ the Lord."  
    I don't want you to go through another Christmas and say “yeah now I have to put on my happy face, it's Christmas”  I want you to experience Christmas because Jesus came to save you!

    In our scripture today, Ephesians 2:1-10 and Romans 3:19-31 we find "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith"
    Looking at the cross was the main focus of Jesus Christ, the main focus of the Gospels, as well as the main focus of the early reformation.  Today, for us too, it is the main focus as we prepare for Easter.  In doing so we focus on Christ and the cross and by that we fulfil not only our church mandate but our entire purpose in preaching and teaching the gospel because we want always to preach Christ crucified, buried and risen again.

    Righteousness of God revealed
    The Righteousness of God revealed through the total depravity of man:
     
    The theme of Paul's letters to the Romans was to emphasize how good and great God is compared to how sinful man is.  It carries on throughout the chapters of Romans.  The subject of how depraved man can be is an uncomfortable one but, once we understand how amazing God and His grace to us is, it is totally liberating.  Shall we go on sinning to show God's goodness?  NO!  
     
    For there is no distinction:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.
     
     
     Have faith and try to be good.
